Exscientia Launches AI-Powered Drug Discovery Platform on AWS
11 July 2024
Exscientia plc has recently announced an extended partnership with Amazon Web Services to enhance its drug discovery and automation platform using AWS's artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) services.
The Exscientia platform integrates generative AI models with AWS's scalable infrastructure to expedite the development of drug candidates tailored to specific diseases and patient needs. Unlike traditional high-throughput screening (HTS) methods that rely on outsourced chemical synthesis and biological testing, Exscientia's DesignStudio employs AI to "learn" rather than "search" through vast chemical spaces for new discoveries. Their UK-based AutomationStudio complements this by synthesizing and testing promising drug candidates identified by the AI, utilizing advanced robotics for molecular synthesis efficiency.
Data generated from these automated tests is continuously fed back into DesignStudio's AI algorithms, facilitating iterative improvement and learning. This iterative approach, known as design-make-test-learn (DMTL), aims to accelerate drug development by seamlessly integrating virtual design with physical experimentation.
AWS technologies, including Amazon Bedrock, augment Exscientia's platform with features like generative AI, active learning, and physics-based systems. The expanded collaboration with AWS extends support beyond DesignStudio to include robotic automation for synthesis and testing, aligning with Exscientia's mission to innovate drug design, discovery, and development.
Exscientia emphasized AWS's scalability and performance as crucial for meeting their needs in the life sciences sector. David Hallett, Ph.D., Interim CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of Exscientia, highlighted the potential of their platform to deliver higher-quality therapies faster and more cost-effectively.
AWS Principal Healthcare & Life Sciences Tech Strategist, Patrick Lamplé, emphasized the transformative impact of cloud technologies in accelerating innovation within the life sciences industry, supporting Exscientia's goal to revolutionize medicine discovery.
Exscientia's expanded collaboration with AWS aims to leverage advanced AI and automation technologies to accelerate drug discovery and bring new treatments to patients more efficiently.
