Exsilio Therapeutics Secures $82 Million Series A Funding to Develop Redosable Genomic Medicines for a Broad Range of Diseases

26 June 2024

Exsilio Therapeutics, a biotechnology company focused on developing genomic medicines for a wide range of diseases, has announced its emergence from stealth mode after securing $82 million in Series A financing. The funding round was co-led by Novartis Venture Fund and Delos Capital, with additional investments from OrbiMed, Insight Partners, J.P. Morgan Life Sciences Private Capital, CRISPR Therapeutics, Innovation Endeavors, Invus, Arc Ventures, and Deep Insight. OrbiMed provided initial seed funding to Exsilio.

The capital raised will be used to advance Exsilio's genomic medicines, which utilize naturally occurring, programmable genetic elements to precisely insert new genes into cells via mRNA intermediates. Exsilio combines predictive in silico modeling with laboratory experiments to engineer these elements for integrating therapeutic genes into safe harbor sites. Their approach leverages mRNA encoding, allowing delivery through established lipid nanoparticle (LNP) platforms that are safe, efficient, scalable, and cost-effective. This method also supports redosing and titration with potential for curative effects.

Exsilio, emphasized the innovative nature of mRNA-based medicines, likening their development to software creation. He highlighted Exsilio's capability to encode genes for permanent integration, potentially offering long-lasting therapeutic benefits rather than temporary relief. This approach could facilitate treatment of genetic diseases irrespective of individual patient mutations. The financing will enable Exsilio to select and advance promising lead candidates, aiming to introduce new therapeutic options for patients.

Exsilio, expressed confidence in Exsilio's ability to safely integrate large genes with the potential for repeated dosing. Henry Chen of Delos Capital, also a board member, underscored the significance of RNA-based payloads and clinically validated non-viral gene delivery technologies in achieving Exsilio's goal of integrating therapeutic genes into patients' genomes effectively.

Exsilio is poised to advance genomic medicine with its innovative approach, supported by a dedicated team and substantial financial backing.
