Transdermal system

Transdermal systemA transdermal system is understood to mean the application of active pharmaceutical ingredients via a patch, which enables more effective absorption (admission of the therapeutic active ingredient into the bloodstream) that is more tolerable for the patient.

Therapeutic systems release the active substance particularly slowly and in a controlled manner over a long time window. The active ingredients diffuse through the skin and get directly into the bloodstream via vessels close to the skin without having to pass through the gastrointestinal tract or the liver.

There are different systems for releasing an active ingredient from the patch into the skin, which can be divided into four areas: passive diffusion, energy-driven diffusion, mechanical perforation and energy-driven perforation. Transdermal patches with an active substance matrix (matrix patches) enable passive diffusion and occupy a dominant position in the market for transdermal systems.

The main therapeutic advantages of transdermal systems compared to other forms of administration are in particular:

  • Decreased Application Frequency
  • Constant drug levels
  • Reduced Adverse Effects
  • Improved Drug Intake Compliance
  • Increased bioavailability
  • Improved pharmacokinetics
