Combinatorial Chemistry

Combinatorial Chemistry is a laboratory technique which includes chemical synthetic methods that make it possible to prepare a large number of compounds in a single process. A millions of molecular constructions can be synthesized and tested for biological activity in combinatorial chemistry. These compound libraries can be made as mixtures, sets of individual compounds or chemical structures, generated by computer software.

The advantages of combinatorial chemistry over traditional includes the creation of large libraries of molecules in a short time. And the compounds that cannot be synthesis zed using traditional methods of medicinal chemistry can be synthesized using combinatorial techniques.  Combinatorial chemistry has been utilized for both drug lead discovery and optimization. As the fields of combinatorial chemistry and computational chemistry began to mature, it became clear that combining the two would lead to higher hit rates. It is more cost-effective to design and screen virtual chemical libraries in silico, such that subsets of the chemical space of likely hits can be defined, prior to the actual synthesis and screening of the libraries.
