Combotope Therapeutics Partners with Boehringer Ingelheim to Develop Tumour-Selective Antibody Cancer Therapies
24 June 2026
Combotope Therapeutics has entered into a strategic research collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim to develop next-generation cancer therapies based on tumour-selective antibodies.
The partnership will use Combotope’s proprietary SMART-Phage™ platform to discover antibodies that target cancer-specific glycan-protein markers, known as combotopes. These markers combine sugar and protein structures that are found more frequently on cancer cells than on healthy tissue, helping to improve the precision of antibody-based treatments.
The approach is particularly relevant for difficult-to-treat cancers where targeted treatment options remain limited. It may also support the development of new therapies across multiple modalities, including antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs).
Under the agreement, the companies will initially work on several oncology targets selected by Boehringer Ingelheim, with the possibility of expanding the collaboration to additional cancer targets in the future. Combotope will apply its SMART-Phage™ platform to generate high-affinity, tumour-selective antibodies and provide supporting characterisation data for each programme.
Boehringer Ingelheim will be responsible for the further research, development, manufacturing and commercialisation of any antibody-based therapies resulting from the collaboration.
As part of the deal, Combotope will receive an upfront payment and research funding for each target. The company is also eligible for development, regulatory and commercial milestone payments, as well as royalties on future product sales. Boehringer Ingelheim will retain global development and commercialisation rights for products arising from the partnership. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
