Global Experts to Gather in Osaka for PDA Aseptic Manufacturing and Regulatory Science Symposium 2026

3 September 2026

As pharmaceutical manufacturers worldwide continue to navigate the implementation of PIC/S GMP Annex 1, a landmark international symposium in Japan will bring together regulators, industry leaders, researchers, and quality professionals to explore practical strategies for advancing aseptic manufacturing and contamination control.

The PDA Aseptic Manufacturing and Regulatory Science Symposium 2026, jointly organized by PDA Asia Pacific and the PDA Japan Chapter, will take place on 22-23 October 2026 at Congress Square Nakanoshima, Osaka, under the theme “Advancing GMP and Annex 1: Practical Implementation and Future Directions.”

Formerly known as the “Symposium of Aseptic,” the event has earned recognition as a key platform supporting the implementation of PIC/S GMP Annex 1. Following successful editions in 2024 and 2025 that focused on advanced practices and regulatory interpretation, the symposium returns in an expanded international format to address ongoing challenges in global Annex 1 adoption.

Industry surveys conducted one year after the implementation of Annex 1 revealed significant differences in interpretation and application across countries, leading to implementation gaps in critical areas such as Contamination Control Strategy (CCS), Aseptic Process Simulation (APS), Environmental Monitoring (EM), and barrier technologies. The Osaka symposium aims to foster dialogue and harmonization among regulators and industry stakeholders to accelerate effective compliance and strengthen patient safety.

Chaired by Yasuhito Ikematsu, Associate Professor at The University of Osaka and Chair of the Aseptic Product GMP Committee of the Japan PDA Pharmaceutical Society, the two-day program will feature international speakers from regulatory agencies, academia, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and technology providers.

A major highlight will be a presentation from Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA), which will share insights from GMP inspections and discuss the development of the forthcoming PIC/S Annex 1 Implementation Document designed to support a more consistent understanding of regulatory expectations worldwide.

The symposium program will cover four core themes: Latest Regulatory Trends, Contamination Control Strategy (CCS), Manufacturing of Aseptic Medicinal Products, and Quality Control & Quality Assurance (QC & QA).

Attendees will gain insights into emerging technologies and industry best practices, including artificial intelligence applications in aseptic manufacturing, digital process simulation, advanced contamination control strategies, robotics in sterile production environments, rapid microbiological methods, sterilizing filtration, and risk management approaches aligned with the latest PDA and ANSI standards.

The event will also spotlight developments in the 19th Edition of the Japanese Pharmacopoeia, including discussions on Rapid Microbiological Methods (RMM) and the Monocyte Activation Test (MAT), reflecting growing international efforts to modernize microbiological quality control while advancing regulatory harmonization.

Speakers include representatives from the PMDA, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA), Takeda, Merck, Daiichi Sankyo, Santen Pharmaceutical, Cytiva, SKAN AG, Innerspace, Charles River, Lachman Consultants, and leading academic institutions including The University of Osaka and The University of Tokyo.

Complementing the conference will be a large-scale industry exhibition showcasing the latest technologies and solutions for aseptic pharmaceutical manufacturing, biopharmaceutical production, and advanced therapy medicinal products.

As regulatory expectations continue to evolve and the industry seeks greater consistency in implementing Annex 1 requirements, the PDA Aseptic Manufacturing and Regulatory Science Symposium 2026 is expected to serve as a vital platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and innovation in sterile manufacturing.
