Roche opens pharmaceutical research and development center in Basel to accelerate scientific innovation

11 September 2024

Roche today announced the opening of the new Pharmaceutical Research and Development Center (pRED) at its global headquarters in Basel. Equipped with cutting-edge technologies and housing around 1,800 state-of-the-art laboratory and office workstations, the new center brings together researchers from different disciplines to advance scientific discoveries for patients.

Severin Schwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Roche Group: “Roche has invested CHF 1.2 billion in the new pRED Center. This underlines our ongoing commitment to supporting Switzerland as a leading innovative location for life sciences – the country where Roche was founded over 125 years ago.”

Thomas Schinecker, CEO of the Roche Group: “The new pRED Center will play an important role in collaborating with our innovation centers around the world and increasing the efficiency of our research and development to achieve the greatest benefit for patients.”

Hans Clevers, Head of Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development (pRED): “By investing in the new pRED Center, we are further advancing scientific research to turn innovations into new medicines and thus better meet the needs of our patients. The new center will enable greater interaction and knowledge exchange between different disciplines, for example between chemists, biologists and data scientists.”

The new pRED Center consists of two laboratory towers (114 m, 72 m) with state-of-the-art laboratory technologies and digital solutions, as well as an office building and a congress center (26 m, 18 m). In total, there are 33 combined laboratories and office floors with 150 laboratories and workspaces for around 1800 researchers. The state-of-the-art buildings were deliberately designed to promote collaboration and an end-to-end mindset in order to bring the most innovative medicines to patients faster.

Since 2009, Roche has invested CHF 4.6 billion in expanding the Basel/Kaiseraugst site, with the inauguration of the pRED Center being the largest single investment. In addition, we are currently investing a further CHF 1.2 billion at the Basel site. In total, investments in the development of the Basel/Kaiseraugst site from 2009 to 2030 amount to CHF 5.8 billion.
