Saniona, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on rare diseases of the central nervous system, announced a new research collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim in schizophrenia. Saniona can receive up to EUR 76.5 million in milestone payments as well as royalties on global net sales for the products developed in the collaboration.

The goal is to identify new treatment options for schizophrenia by exploring a new ion channel target in the CNS with Saniona's drug discovery platform in ion channels. Boehringer Ingelheim has exclusive global rights to research, develop, manufacture and commercialize treatments identified through the collaboration.

Saniona will receive research funding during the joint research period. During the first year of the collaboration, Saniona expects about SEK 5 million (EUR 0.45 million).

Boehringer Ingelheim and Saniona started the first collaboration in 2016 to develop new treatment alternatives in schizophrenia with a focus on GABA-α5 ion channels for the treatment of cognitive impairment. That program is currently in preclinical development.
