First discovered in 1929 and approved in the 1930s via animal extracts, an economic and more efficient synthesis of progesterone from yams was commercialized in 1940.  Subsequently, Pfizer’s legacy company Upjohn, revolutionized the manufacture using a derivative from abundant plant sterols, making Progesterone more broadly available.  Progesterone is one of the most prescribed medications in the U.S., with more than 3 million prescriptions written in 20181.
