Introduction
AbbVie has announced a $1.4 billion investment to develop a 185-acre pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in Durham. The advanced site will combine modern manufacturing and laboratory systems with artificial intelligence (AI) to support the production of medicines across immunology, neuroscience and oncology.
Features
The Durham campus, located near Research Triangle Park, was selected due to the strength of the regional workforce and its capacity to support future expansion.
The development will strengthen the company’s ability to support future medical advances while also creating jobs and building a long-term partnership with the local community and the state.
AbbVie plans to recruit around 734 employees, including engineers, scientists, manufacturing operators and laboratory technicians. In addition, the project is expected to generate more than 2,000 construction jobs during the development phase.
The investment forms part of the company’s broader $100 billion commitment towards research, development and capital investments in the U.S. over the next decade. The first phase will include small volume parenteral (SVP) drug product manufacturing units, next-generation laboratories, a warehouse, administrative offices and employee wellness spaces, with capacity for future expansion.
Construction is set to begin this year, with completion targeted by the end of 2028.
