AbbVie has announced plans to invest $195 million in its North Chicago facility to increase active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) production in the United States. The investment supports the company’s strategy to strengthen domestic manufacturing and develop future medicines in key therapeutic areas.

The new facility will expand chemical synthesis capabilities in North Chicago, supporting production of APIs for existing and next-generation treatments in neuroscience, immunology and oncology.

This project forms part of AbbVie’s broader commitment to invest over $10 billion in the United States over the next ten years, enhancing innovation and manufacturing capacity.

The expansion will increase the company’s U.S. manufacturing footprint, which currently includes 11 sites and supports more than 6,000 jobs, along with many roles in supplier networks.

AbbVie’s headquarters and more than 11,000 employees are based in Illinois, reinforcing the company’s strong ties to the state.

Construction is scheduled to begin in autumn 2025, with the facility expected to become fully operational in 2027.
