Introduction:

Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) has announced plans to invest more than $1.2 billion to expand and modernise its Lilly del Caribe manufacturing site in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

Features:

The investment will incorporate advanced technologies and enhance production capacity within the existing campus to support Eli Lilly’s expanding portfolio of oral solid medicines in the areas of cardiometabolic health, neuroscience, oncology, and immunology.

This development highlights Puerto Rico’s continued importance within Eli Lilly’s long-term manufacturing strategy. It forms part of the company’s previously announced $50 billion capital investment commitment aimed at expanding its manufacturing presence across the United States. The company has already unveiled projects in Texas and Virginia, with two additional sites expected to be revealed soon.

The expansion is expected to create around 1,000 construction jobs and 100 high-skilled manufacturing roles. In addition, Eli Lilly is contributing to local bioscience growth by providing scholarships for students pursuing studies in engineering, science, technology, and business administration.

Construction of the expanded oral solid medicine manufacturing facility is scheduled to begin in 2026, with production expected to commence by the end of 2028.
