Thermochromic

What it is?

Thermochromic ink is a special kind of ink that changes color when exposed to different temperatures. The color remains the same at lower temperature.

How do you detect it?

The document which contains a thermochromic ink should be heated in order to distinguish that the ink changes appearance. Typically, for security applications, the heating is performed by rubbing the ink with a finger.

How does it work?

Thermochromic ink is printed and part of the packaging artwork.

What do we think about this technology?

This solution is almost never used in the brand protection field. Indeed, it has all the drawbacks of the special inks and brings only a weak level of security since it is widely available for any printer. Its usage is typically limited to specific fields like concert tickets, vouchers, or excise stamps. In general, thermochromic ink can be efficiently replaced by a Cryptoglyph®, since it is simpler and cheaper to print, while providing a higher security level.

Field of application

Tickets, certificates, tax stamps, official documents, cosmetics, food and beverages.
