Resonant mass measurement (RMM) is a technique used to detect and count sub-visible and sub-micron particles in a sample and to measure their size, mass and distribution while also providing information on viscosity and density. The principle relies on having a mechanically resonant structure to which mass can be added or subtracted, thereby shifting the resonant frequency up or down. The biopharmaceutical formulation monitoring technique is being used in a highly innovative way by Malvern Panalytical, whose Archimedes MEMS (micro electro-mechanical systems) sensor contains a resonating cantilever with a microfluidic channel embedded in its surface. When a particle between 50 nanometres and 5 microns flows through the channel, it changes the cantilever’s resonating frequency, thus indicating the particle’s buoyant mass, dry mass and size. The sensor provides information on sample concentration, viscosity, density and volume as well as positivity and negativity of particles. ATA Scientific offers and supplies the Malvern Archimedes, the innovative new instrument for accurately measuring particle mass in fluid and size. The Archimedes offers a number of benefits to users including;
