Why Membrane Nitrogen Generators?

Membrane Nitrogen Gas Generators are suitable for high flow on-site Nitrogen generation needs. They are the perfect replacement for bulk supplies and expensive and erratic gas supply from merchants in cylinders or in liquid. Membranes are manufactured by our American Principals – MEDAL – Air Liquide, and are made to specifications which are very suitable for operation in tropical climates. MVS experience of more than a decade in supply of such systems, makes MVS – MEDAL Membrane Nitrogen generators the perfect choice for our customers.

HOW IT WORKS

Atmosphere is made up of a variety of gases, with the most abundant gas being Nitrogen followed by Oxygen. Nitrogen makes up 78% of the atmosphere, however cannot be used as is without separation. Membrane Separation Process uses the principle of different rates of diffusion of gases through the membrane fibres. Gases diffusing at a faster rate, like water vapour and oxygen are exhausted through the vent port. Slower gases like Nitrogen continue through the membrane bores and are delivered as the product gas at the product end of the membrane.

Air Liquide's membrane technology is hollow polymeric fibres comprised of a core which is used for mechanical strength and a sheath optimized for the separation of gas. A module of 12-inch contains between 0.5 to 1 million fibers that would extend for 750 miles when laid end-to-end. Modules in membrane technology based generators may contain more than 1 million individual hollow fibers designed in cross flow and counter flow designs. This design allows flexibility in meeting all pressure drop and performance constraints. Bundles are designed with high-performance fibers to enable operations at elevated/raised temperatures and extreme pressures. This allows for higher membrane productivity, fewer membranes, and lower system CAPEX.

Calculation of optimum Nitrogen production from membranes is complex. It depends on several factors that include pressure drop across the membrane feed air temperature and the volumetric flow of feed air, and desired purity at the outlet. We, at MVS, do the study for our customers and deliver an optimized and efficient system for on-site Nitrogen production.
