How It Began
Early on, Chester Sykes recognized the market potential of die cut lidding in the United States so he bought a used letterpress, converted it into an in-line die-cutting machine and created Label Makers Inc in 1967. As the business progressed and different customers presented their unique packaging needs, he acquired the equipment and processes to make it happen, something LMI Packaging still does to this day.
Based upon his past work experience, Chester also wanted to create a business where employees could be heard, and he did just that. He went so far as to go on a daily walk around the production floor to talk to every employee and see how they were doing. Chester created an atmosphere where his employees wanted to work hard and never let anyone down. This standard paved the way for the corporate culture of LMI and its practice is still upheld today.
