Metronidazole is used in the treatment of susceptible protozoal infections and in the treatment and prophylaxis of anaerobic bacterial infections. Specific bacterial infections treated with metronidazole include bacterial vaginosis, acute phase of Vincent’s infection and Giardiasis. It is also used in the treatment of dracontiasis (giunea-worm infection) and has been given for inflammatory bowel disease.
