After the separation, the OFD is used to register the odor associations with the individual components together with the respective retention times. For this purpose, the substances eluted from the GC column are led out of the GC oven chamber via a capillary and sniffed out and registered by the tester at the actual "sniffing port", the end of the capillary in a glass funnel.

During the development of the SIM OFD, particular importance was attached to the device-technical requirements, which enable an optimal evaluation of the odor impressions:

  • Absolute odor neutrality of the components used in order not to impair the odor perception of the eluted substances.
  • Heated transfer line without "cold spots" to sniff out even high-boiling substances.
  • Fatigue-free work thanks to the height-adjustable setting of the "sniffing port".
  • Supply of humidified air into the glass funnel to prevent the nasal mucous membranes from drying out.
  • Parallel detection with other GC detectors (e.g. FID, MSD, ECD).
  • The microfluidic splitters (with/without makeup gas, Deans circuit) are based on Agilent Capillary Flow Technology and have the additional advantage that all gas flows can be conveniently set using the device software.
  • Various ways for quick documentation of odor impressions (abbreviations, via the menu bar, via the keyboard or via handwriting recognition).
  • Integrated into Agilent ChemStation/MS Chemstation.
